Should I expect a theft of items from my unlocked car to be investigated?

I live in Huntsville, AL. After spending a few hours at my friends' apartment, my brother and I went to leave around 2:30 in the morning. Once we got to the car, I immediately realized that someone had gone through it. The only things we have found to be missing are my debit card, my brothers iPod, and a backpack that could have contained a number of things. I called and filed a police report, and had my card reported stolen. The police said an investigator would contact me within the next couple days.
Should I expect them to attempt to find my lost items? I have a charge on my card (which was declined, because I didn't have enough money for the purchase) which they can very easily find out where the thief tried to use it.
I would just like to know what to expect from the police.

The cops have to do some investigation. They can call the card company and see if the card was used and where. The location where the card was used can be checked for video footage of the individual. If your brother knows the serial number of the ipod try calling apple. It's remotely possible, since it's wifi, that the activity can be traced. Give it a try. Good luck. |

No, they won't do anything. The only thing that could happen, is if the person tries to use your card, it'll send up a red flag, but that's it. It won't be an active investigation. |
