What do the police do when they get called to report a runaway?

Like, the parents called the cops on their son or daughter for runningaway. What do the police do? What i mean is. Do they actually look for them. Do they wait untill they get arrested somewhere else and then take them home? Do they go through text and email records? Can the police use that to get text records and things like that?

I can speak for what happens in California, but I suspect most states are very similar in how runaway are handled by police. In California, a runaway is considered a "missing person", and a report is required by law to be taken by the police and entered into a statewide computer system. The report includes information like name, description, etc. The police agency may then either publish or broadcast the information about the runaway to its officers or other agencies. The truth is that this type of information is of very low priority among officers, who usually have neither the time nor inclination to go out actively looking for runaways. A runaway report is rarely actually investigated by the police, in other words, the report is taken and nobody does any active looking for the person. The exception would be in the case of very young children who have run away, but they are usually found near by after a short search. Sometimes a parent will get information that their runaway child is at a particular location and ask the police to locate them; however, this is not too common. Most often, runaways return home on their own. Running away from home is not a crime and police have no real authority to arrest or take into custody a runaway. We usually just convince them to let us take them home or have their parents pick them up. Most are usually cooperative and ready to go home anyway. If they do get arrested for a crime, they may or may not be released to a parent, depending on what the crime was. The runaway report is then cancelled until the next time they bounce from their home.
