When did borstal end and was it really much worse than what prison is like today?

When I was in prison they used to talk about borstal been worse than prison is like today and punishments they used to get there especially beatings. Was it really as bad back then?

Well I went to Portland Borstal twice during the 70's. There were aspects of it that was quite tough, but nothing that young men of that type couldn't handle. The prison officers kept a tight reign and there was very little bullying. I was actually sent there from an open borstal after doing a runner. I thought two prison officers there were going to kill me or take me to the limit (but that's another story). There were no telephone calls and the level of privelidges as there are today. You were locked up and people hardly heard from you until you were released. By todays standards it was very tough, but it was the loss of freedom that is really tough, not the marching, shouting, early mornings. I actualy gained weight when I was in there and for many being treated reasonably fairly by prison officers and equal to everyone else, is the fairest treatment they have ever experienced in their lives.

confucious says
borstal was no worse than public school and to be honest it was not at all bad. some were particulary hard and brutal but these were the one that had to to take the offenders from other borstals where the had misbehaved. READING BORSTAL was a hell hole also PORTLAND BORSTAL BUT these only took the worst of the bunch and were intended to be a punishment. all the others were ok IMO north sea camp was a borstal for the workshy and in this place they worked solid building sea walls to reclaim the land it is now one of the largest prison farms in the UK. ALMOST 18 MILES ROUND THE PERIMETER

in 1902 a village in Kent open a trail prison for young offender, unlike any other prison ( until then young offender would be sent to same prison as adults but on a different wing) they was called borstal after the village Borstal institutions were designed to offer education, regular work and discipline. The Criminal Justice Act 1982 abolished the borstal system in the UK, introducing youth custody centres instead
