Why are there so many fat and out of shape police officers?

S S	Almost all of the cops in my area are FAT. They huff and puff when they walk. There is no way they could run, not ever for there own life. Please read how condescending the " Officers of the Law " respond to our comments. We are not allowed to have an opinion. If so we are called names and we are stupid, read them for yourself! On this question and others posted. This is a another representation of how we are treated in general. In person or on the computer. Example: Why can't you dumb shits just obey the law". Armywifeok	Ok, I particularly love your question because I've heard the answer before. For my human resources class my professor was actually also the human resources manager for the city, he hired the cops among others. He one day told us, once they get out of the police academy, they are allowed to grow out, and made a motion to his waist line. Essentially they only have to be fit enough to make it through, then they get a free pass.

freeyourself1anarchist	Standards are super low and there is no accountability for police. Honestly being fat and out of shape is the least of our concerns I am more concerned with their reckless endangerment of life. Just a few days ago I saw two cops in their cruiser nearly kill a pedestrian because they were speeding and made a careening U turn because there was a protest going on that was not violent or rowdy just loud and peaceful. Or about two weeks ago when cops let a felon drive off after a hit and run, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, destruction of property, running a red light, speeding, assault with a deadly weapon, and possibly attempted murder with only a fricken' citation. Or not too mention Sean Bell or De'onte Rawlings or Rodney King or the police KKK scandals throughout the years and any of the many other cases of police brutality or misconduct. We don't elect cops they just sign up go through some B.S. training get handed lethal and dangerous weapons and do whatever they want for the most part and get away with it because they are not accountable to anyone and the only times they don't get away with things if the cameras are in their faces and usually then they send them away so they can do as they please. Here is what should happen cops should be elected or at least voted on by a citizens council, they must go through a rigorous screening test making sure they are fair and impartial and will fulfill their duties correctly and they must go through intense training which includes being pepper sprayed and tear gassed and tasered and hit with clubs and pushed and shoved anything that cops might do so they know what they are doing and how it affects people and of course they must be certified and licensed to carry any weapons. They must also take a regular check up test to make sure they can still perform the job in a truly impartial manner and that they are not motivated in any sense by anything they like or dislike and that they are accountable to the community. If these aren't met then they cannot be cops it is pretty simple (though it sounds a bit more complicated on "paper") One last thing that is important, their salary should be based on work they do, so sitting in their cruiser all day not protecting the people or keeping the peace, means no pay. So no more money for sitting in a parking lot eating donuts and no more quotas. Just a quickie personal thing I love donuts and hate cops

Me	Almost all officers work rotating shifts. It's hard to stay on a schedule where exercising and such can be built in. Often we don't have time to sit down and eat a decent meal (i've learned to scarf my meal down as fast as I can haha). Usually its a trip to a drive thru and eat on the way to a call. Every officer is certified with feeling the affect of their weapons (except for their firearm). I was sprayed with pepper spray so I know how to give proper aid after spraying someone. I've been tased with my taser so I know the affect of the weapon. All these things are usually re certified every year, so we have to go through that at least once a year! not pleasant, but hey, it comes with the job. There are many obese Police Officers around, but so is 95% of the U.S. population. But yes, as a police officer I do believe there should be higher standards (but not outrageous). I believe every department should have some type of fitness program, but budget wont allow it, not enough officers out on the road wont allow it and usually the crazy schedule wont allow it. P.S.- Dougnuts are ooolllllldddddd, we eat bagels now! I'm not a fat cop, they say i'm too skinny :(, can't win for losing.

mebe1042	It's the result of pent up stress from dealing with clueless people like the guy above me. BTW, someone want to tell that "Genius" above me that my "BS training" includes what he thinks Police Officers should have to go through! Let's be real here. Who cares? I would be considered "Overweight" by many, yet I lift weights on a regular basis and regularly bicycle 15 miles every other day. A lot of Officers gain weight because either they are unable to follow a regular exercise program because of the different shifts they work or in some departments, they end up having to work a ton of overtime and have court appearances during their days off that they can't. Or are so burned out at the end of their day that all they want to do is eat something and sleep. Packing a healthy meal would work if I would have a guarantee that I could have a half hour of undisturbed time to go back and eat it but that doesn't happen. Not to mention those of us that work nights can't really follow any diet plan because we don't eat at "Normal" times. And unfortunately, healthy eating and restaurants are often mutually exclusive and those are often the only choice an Officer has if he wants to eat. EDIT-Yes S S, we Serve and Protect. But that doesn't mean we kiss your butt in doing so either.

bkt85	I dont think that is an appropriate question. I think an appropriate question would be "Why can't you dumb shits just obey the law". But to answer your question. No all police officers are fat and out of shape. Some of them are not in the best shape, but consider the constant burden of shift work and not being able to sleep a normal schedule like everyone else. Think of being in a patrol car for 8 or 12 or 16 hours out trying to look for crimes in progress. Think of how many places that you can eat stay open 24/7.. Its not an easy job and it will never be. There is always going to be job security because people cant behave. Before you think to criticize cops, think about smartening up. And the donut thing!!! Ya, thats old...
