Will a jaywalking charge appear on my criminal record?
Find answers to your legal question.

Will a jaywalking charge appear on my criminal record?

Today, I was given a fine to pay for jaywalking in Calgary. Because I'm under the Young Offenders Act of Canada, it talks about something called a non-disclosure date. How long does it take to get to a non-disclosure date? After that will my record of jaywalking be destroyed? And before a non-disclosure date, will I need a pardon to travel to other countries?

A Jaywalking ticket is a Civil Citation. Civil matters do not appear on a Criminal Records Check. Your non-disclosure date is generally your 18th birthday, when your juvvie record becomes officially sealed. As for the pardon...to enter 99%+ of all countries on the planet? No.

your worrying too much. all it is is a ticket. it shouldn't affect your criminal record at all. tickets don't appear on your criminal record. just like a car ticket. No you don't need a pardon for God sakes its a ticket for J-Walking... i assume your worried about it being on your criminal record and it will affect your chances at getting a job. just imagine how ridiculous this sounds. Your at a job interview with 4 people up for the same job. if the j walking ticket somehow ended up on your criminal record (Which it wont) you would be the only one at the job interview with a criminal record. you have much higher qualifications then the other 3 at the interview the interview is going great. they ask you if you have a criminal record and you say that you do for j-walking. your afraid that they may not give you a job or not allow you into a university because you didn't cross the street at the stop lights.... .sound pretty ridiculous if i were you i would just pay the ticket and stop worrying. remember its a fine used to protect you. the only reason they have it in place is so that you learn that it is dangerous to cross the streets where there is no stop walks. the Canadian government doesn't want you to get hit by a car. as for the record of j-walking i don't think they keep the record of people who j walk. you seem to be comparing this to a crime like murder.. its not. Its a ticket. just remember that

it will be just a fine there will be no criminal record unless u dont pay it.you can still go abroad i fink am from the uk and i when to canada on bail

The only thing that shows on a criminal record in Canada is a violation of the law. By law I mean any federal statute of Canada such as the Criminal Code, the CDSA or even the National Defence Act (if you are in the military). Jaywalking and such is a regulatory offence under local bylaws and as such it does not show on a criminal records check. Its just a ticket like a parking ticket or a ticket you would get if your dog didn`t have a tag. What they are refering to by the nondisclosure date is the fact that you are still a young person and as such your info is protected and restricted under the law and that people (insurance companies, drivers license offices....) cannot have access to it. Once you turn 18 the info is sealed anyway so it really doesn`t matter. (Unless you have done something else or do something else that is a violation of criminal law you will not have a record and can travel where ever you want)

Jaywalking fines are like a cop kicking you in the shin because he doesn't like your face. Its the most minor of minor offenses and no one will look twice at it.
