Can someone please tell me how many fire exits are needed by law for a 3 bedroomed house?

I need to know if its legal to have a 3 bedroomed house with only a front door as a fire exit? I rent a house and a flood has caused the back door to jam closed and my landlord seems to think this is ok. Can anyone help please pinky

Dave
dont know about illegality but a door thats saturated just needs a carpenter to plane it, takes half hour, in uk looking at about £40. {min call out charge}

Dr David
To be honest, I do not think there is any legal requirement. However, as you are renting the property, this may not be the case. May I suggest you contact your local fire brigade, and ask to speak to a safety officer, who will come and check out the property, and also advise on smoke alarms. This should be free of charge, and they are also very willing to help. If they find a problem, they may contact your landlord and instruct them to ensure the property meets the necessary requirements. Hope this helps.

Your Back door should be made to Open and Close properly ,and it is your Landlords responsibility,tell him to get it sorted or you can report it to your Council and also speak to the local Fire Station. He should also make one of the Bedroom Windows an escape Route too,if a fire started downstairs in the Night you wouldn't stand a chance,I hope he has installed Smoke Alarms too or he will be in trouble. When a private House is Let out to Rent it has to be Recorded to the Council...see if it has been.

As far as I know - Downstairs you must have a front and a back door. Then upstairs at least one of your windows must open big enough for a person to clime out of. He definitely needs to get the back door sorted!!! Good luck!

Complete rubbish your landlord talks aloud of bull 2 fire exits are needed 1 being down stairs the other being up stairs but if I'm right in all rooms in houses should be fitted with windows which can be used as fire escapes.If your still unsure contact your local fire station they will be happy to help you with your queries but you need to get the back door sorted out remember calling the fire station only takes a second but death from a house fire would last a lifetime

It depends on what codes you local government has established. Windows can also be counted as exits in some cases (usually size and height restrictions apply) Check with you local building official or fire department.

id phone the local council or housing assosation in the morning because they would know, i have a feeling its two (one upstairs), which means a window that an adult can get their body through and one downstairs, i actually have three downstairs myself, but the window upstairs has a special catch on it, to open very wide

Two doors is the norm but if the windows open wide enough for an average size adult to easily got through I think that might be enough. But as you have a door it is your landlords duty to have it fixed. See your local citizens advice they will help.

ur landlord thinks its ok so he doesnt have tp fork money out 2 fix it! i think u need the back door. if theres a fire in the lounge (god forbid) u'd use the front door. If theres a fire in between.....ur knackered. get the landlord to fix it or do it yourself and bill him

You need to have 2 exits. A front and back door. Your door being jammed closed is not ok. If he does'nt fix the problem get a fire inspector to come in for a inspection and send the report to your landlord. We live in Military housing and they sent in a fire inspector to check out the house. While he was here he made sure there was nothing blocking the two entrances.

Look up your local/state's housing code,or call code enforcement! Did you ever consider calling your friendly local firefighter?? Start there...
