I'm trying to find out if Canada still has it legal to download any MP3 file, such as a song from (Artist) since 2003-2004. I know Canada is a bit gray on this area where it wasn't illegal to download these files for personal use. However it was illegal to upload them and distribute them which doesn't fall under personal use anymore. In other words, does Canada still allow downloading of MP3's for legal use but not the distribution of them to others?
I have made a few trance songs throughout the years and I'm trying to find out if it's illegal in Canada for those songs to be downloaded off a site or P2P for personal use. If the law is still the same as in 2004 then I guess the government can only target those that provide them for download, not those that download these songs.
Please don't respond with U.S laws as they differ from Canadian laws and don't apply to us unless our courts pass the same laws.

the law being what it is in Canada is quite different than anywhere else in the world.
what you are thinking about is punishable by a hefty fine and/or 10 years in prison.......but.....if you kill someone you will get bail and when/if you are convicted you will get 25 years in prison with time off for good behavior.
that will knock it down to about 12 years,,,,then you lawyer will whine that this is not fair and you will get only about 3 years....but.....if you are a "young offender" you will get 8 months under house arrest where you are free to play video games all day.you may even luck out and get no time to serve and possibly the government will cut you a check for bothering you with such petty matters. |

According to Wikipedia (I know it's not a reputable source, but at least it's current and has links to reputable sources), it is still legal. They were supposed to introduce a bill to outlaw it, but that fell through due to public outcry.
