Do i have the right to refuse a search by a police officer in the uk?

I see them on tv harassing people & i wonder if they even have the legal right to search you considering you are not under arrest.

no, a UK police officer has the right to search you if he feels you are acting in a suspicious way or you could have illegal substances on you. in other words they can search you if they feel like it if a public enquiry rules that its perfectly lawful for tow officers to hold a man down as another officer shoots him 7 times in the head then in my book the police can do anything they want

i think it was 2 or 3 years ago, a law was passed so that police officers have the right to carry out a random search is they feel that the person in question has some something on them that they should, the law was introduced to help fight the drug battle.

The Police officer needs to have "reasonable suspicion" to search your person. In proper conduct can amount to 'trespass of the person' by the police officer. You certainly have no legal obligation to stop and talk to a police officer if they ask you to. They are "citizens in uniform" and only have a right to question you if they have legal grounds to, which they must inform you of. "I am searching you under the Prevention of Terrorism Act" etc) and you have the right to prosecute if you feel there was no legal grounds for this.

You can refuse to be searched, but it'll be taken as an indication that you're hiding something. Then you WILL be under arrest.
