Is it illegal not to pay someone when they go on break?

I am going to be working at the Calgary Stampede this year and they told us they are not going to pay us when we go on break. My friend told me they gave payed break last year and he wondered if it was lawful to even do this. Is it?

JGally	If you are paid for 8 hours, you will be there for 8.5hrs. You should get two 10 minute breaks, and one 30 minute lunch. So the two 10s are paid, the 30 minute lunch is unpaid. Pay for 8, stay for 8.5.
