So we think I'm getting paid out too much in maternity benefits. Well, more money, usually i'd be ecstatic.
All the letters, reports, e-mails, and statements I have received from My Service Canada, equal exactly the cheqs I have been receiving. The benefit rate match up.
However percentage wise, it's more then what I should be getting.
My worry is - if they notice they've made a mistake well they A) Just stop giving me so much, or will they also B) order me to give them back all the money I have received? After all - its not my mistake. I'm only taking what the government has told me I earned.

You will be required to pay back overpayments that EI has made to you, even if the error was EIs. Your best bet is to contact Service Canada and confirm they are paying the correct benefit amount. |

They cannot order you to pay it back, to my knowledge, but can later take it out of your pay/deductions that you "owe it". I would be looking into this further, though. People in the US are not really aware of Canadian laws, so might post on the Canada forum as well. |
