Consider this scenario, a couple has a 5 year old son who has down syndrome with an IQ of 70. They want to use gene therapy to insert a gene to increase him IQ to 100.

If both the parents and the child consent, then yes, the treatment should be available.
It's unethical to restrict access to medical treatment simply because some members of society don't like the idea of the treatment. (The only exception would be if an innocent third party was hurt by the treatment, but that's an extremely unlikely scenario).
Think about it like this- when vaccines were first produced, certain religious groups considered them to be immoral, claiming that if God wanted you to die of smallpox, you should do so. A few fringe groups hold similar opinions today. I don't think anyone today would suggest we restrict access to vaccines simply because certain groups don't like them. I don't really see a reason why the same logic can't be applied to other forms of medical treatment. |

i believe that the use of gene therapy in this case would be ok, but when it gets to choosing things like the physical appearance of the child, that's crossing the line. There's no problem giving the kid an average IQ, but when you go so far as to try to make him superficially better than others, it's going too far. With things like genetic disease, gene therapy is acceptable, but anything other than that is a little too much, in my opinion anyway. |
