Political correctness?

Has political correctness gone too far?

lloydwaycott
Yes, of course. And to be honest Yahoo Answers seems to be going that way too judging by my receipt of TWO violation notices this morning. The problem with political correctness is , to paraphrase the insane Iranian prime minister, it's "a freight train hurtling down the tracks, gaining speed, with no brakes, and no reverse gear". It seems freedom of speech is alive and well, as long as those in charge agree with what you have to say.

JZD
The problem is that political correctness itself has been hijacked. When it first emerged (from the USA) PC was simply a way of avoiding offensive or stereotyping language - e.g. spastic; darkie; coloured and so on. It then became a vehicle for every busybody organisation to deem all sorts of phrases and descriptions unacceptable. It then became almost a badge of honour to claim you were 'politically incorrect'. A great shame that such a worthy objective should have become so polluted. Genuine political correctness is not about limiting freedom of speech, it is about limiting the feedom to be offensive.

This question is constantly coming up and again I answer YES - however, I now state we are on the point of no return - but we can try to stop more by voicing our opinions to our MP and use our vote to get these out.

Its gone MAD!! I think its a big cause in the racial tension in Britain today, most "ethnic minorities" don't give two stuffs if we celebrate Easter, or send Christmas cards, its the politicians with too much time on their hands and "stupid idea" quotas to meet which are responsible yet its the face of the "ethnic minorities" stuck on the front of it, who as I said before have more important stuff to worry about. Lock all people with political connections in the Tower of London and have a happy life!

Barmy
It has completely taken away the right of free speech, people cannot openly state what they think/feel or have opinions on without fear of prosecution, absolutley ridiculous, we're supposed to be moving forward in time, not backward. Some stuff I see reported on the news programmes beggars belief, the other week on Points West it was rambling on about 200 years since the abolition of slavery and that people today should apologise for it..WTF? read, abolished 200 years ago, none of us are responsible for actions taken 200 years ago, but its PC gone mad, same with the conservative MP yesterday, effectively sacked for revealing what goes on in the army, are you telling me the ethnic minorities are never going to hear anything like "get a move on you black B*******" to motivate them? Stupid and blown way out of proportion yet again. He is spot on with his statement that many of the blacks ect, use the race discrimination card to hide behind, not just in the army either, as soon as you deny one of them something, thats the card they pull out.....they need to get real....or get out oif the situation that gives rise to them being on the receiving end of that feedback!

Yes, much too far. It's causing too much unnecessary stress.

Of course it has - the NHS hospital where i live has cancelled the easter holiday as it may offend others religions - well i say "so what if it does - let them live with or put up with it just like we have to with theirs" - if we are supposed to be an accepting society then that means everyone not just the select few that come here and want everything their way

It's like all kinds of correctness these day. Nobody cares. Nothing is surprising anymore. So, don't be surprised what you hear and see.

Karen
Of course it has!! Things like this only go to show what nonsense it is................................................. THE NHS should ban staff from saying 'mum and dad' and 'husband and wife' to avoid offending gays, a taxpayer-funded report urges. Instead it suggests they consider using phrases like "guardians" or "carers".!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MrsZ
Yes! I'm legally married and my doctor refers to my husband as my PARTNER! I hate that! He's my husband, I've introduced him as my husband every single time we've seen this lady which is quite often, more than 20 times at least. Pisses me off that now we are being referred to as partners. We're not gay and we're legally married, so why not call us husband and wife? Is it now polically incorrect to use those terms, too? It's all gone waaaay to far and it's a joke.

Wolfgang
Oh yes.

yes of course it has. we are not allowed to express opinions aymore we must give generic, unoffensive answers even if we dont agree with it. people are too scared to offend people now, not that we should for the sake of it, but if you believe in something you should stick by it and defend it regardless of others. however we must not go to far. there is a thin line that can be easily crossed.
