(UK) Is it legal for a film production company to film a documentary?

Based on, matters of the law between a woman and her estranged partner, without the estranged partner having any knowledge of the documentary being made and aired on National TV. The man had violated restraining orders and had been tried, he admitted the offences and was therefore prosecuted accordingly. But was the production company allowed to air the womans side of the story,(without notifying the estranged or even making him aware of the documentary) without hearing the other persons story too! This woman is well known to people close to her and was also known to Embellish the truth, Lie and Manipulate relationships. Her name and Identity were made public (her own choice), although the mans was protected. Thy were both born, raised and lived in a community where thy were very well known and liked. The guy had had drink problems for years. He was never violent, he was thrown out, but kept returning to the family home to c his kids. He Hung himself and died days after the docu aired!

It is the law of gossip, nothing has been done wrong. The woman is allowed to tell her side if identity is protected, and what she says is accountable to her. People are allowed to say things, to one person, 5 or 2 million they are allowed as they take responsability for it. Everyone in shot or featured on the film would have had to sign a waver or disclaimer admonishing the company from liability. Documentaries have been around a while a lot of paperwork has grown up with it to stop just such claims, holes are very rare where the companies slip up in their liability, and they laso usually take out liability insurance on top of these measures. However, if the identity of this person is not sufficiently protected there is a case of libel in the UK. Published material about a person discrediting them professionally or personally creates a civil case of libel, which can be taken into court. However this person would have to have been named, or known beyond shadow of doubt to people with no connection to the story or him. I find this very unlikely in a documentary featuring another person who protected the name.

It is legal, yes. It only would have been slanderous if they had revealed his name, and he would have had to have proved that what was said wasn't true.

if you blur out his face and you may have to change his voice, then depending on other parties involved it would be legal. Best to consult a lawyer tho
