On the one hand, the guy has "paid his debt to society," as the saying goes, but on the other, he seems to be a pretty serious risk to the community. A known danger is being put back into the community and, to my way of thinking, the risks (more violence) of doing this far outweigh the benefits (such as rehabilitation). I think this points to deficiencies in the sentencing process.
Supervising him is one possibility, but at what expense? Is it worth hiring people to watch him 24/7 and, if that is done, how is it different than putting him on permanent house arrest? Given his crimes, I think he should be kept in lock up.
That's just my view. Perhaps a criminal lawyer or someone else in "the system" (I'm a lawyer, but I practice in a different area.) could provide some good insight. |
