have a promise to apear court date in january in alberta and i have no clue what to do. this is my first offence and i was caught with about 7 - 8 grams, i am a 20 year old student and have no idea if i get a lawyer or not, if so i can not afford a lawyer. I first of all am wondering since the officer knows it was my pot if i should just plea guilty, and if not what i should do? second i want to know my chances of getting a criminal record or going to jail for this. i don't know anything about court and am extremely nervous. someone please give me some information! thank you so muc

You definately need a lawyer.
Go to your city Legal Aid office and get a free coupon to pick a lawyer.
Your first appearance will be just to plead. Plead as the lawyer directs.

I'm unfamiliar with Alberta law. Being from the lower 48, I do know that as a defendant here, one has a right to counsel if he can not afford a lawyer. You should have the same unless it posession of such a small amount is a misdemeanor. Anyway, think hard about pleading guilty. There might be a way to plead guilty and after a probationary period, have th record expunged. But seek help from someone familiar with the laws in your province |
