if a child is born from parents of different races, which parent determines the race listed on govt documents?

ie i am american indian and my husband is caucasian

I recently gave birth in LA, my husband is Mexican and I am a white American. I was told when filling out the birth certificate form that it is determined by the father's nationality. All I am going to say is that the stronger you push the issue and remain polite as I did, my son is legally considered white.

the question is always asked,but an all information you are asked of race you put both,thats what i do.they are what they are.

the father is usually the one who is responsible for the childs race.... so if the father is mexican and the mother is black the baby is considered mexican....

Neither parent "determines" -- it is a matter to be discussed/negotiated. A child who's 50% Native American and 50% Caucasian is just that -- the parents, and eventually the child, can decide which racial/ethnic identity they wish to embrace. However, in the example you have given the child can be identified as either race/ethnicity.

I think that some countries, such as Canada, no longer ask about race on government documents. Since we're all members of the human race, I suppose it doesn't matter.
