what are the laws regarding 'squatting' on government land?
Find answers to your legal question.

what are the laws regarding 'squatting' on government land?

Hypathetically, if one wanted to become a 'mountain man' and move to the deep wilderness (say somewhere on government property in Dekoda or Montana) and build a small living area off the beaten path, are there laws against sush things? Or even laws allowing 'squatter's rights', on some mountain or in a forrest?

I wouldn't look for government land to live on because if it's fun, free, or entertaining the govm't will close it to the public, charge admission, or make it illegal and arrest you. However if you come accross abandon property or dwelling and no one is making claim to it, in most states you can pay any back property taxes on it live there openly as in recieve mail, pay utilities, make improvements and so forth and after a certain amount of time, each state is different but usally 7 to 10 years and durring that time the owner or deed holder has not made any claims to it it becomes yours. I haven't researched this answer but I'm pretty sure this is true. I would of course check the legalities of such a hostile take over first before doing this.

I don't know about building-maybe pitch a tent. That won't help you in the winter though.I think every piece of land in U.S.is owned by someone.

Squatter's rights were repealed in the 70s. If you are found you will be removed. Go for it though.

Squatter's rights doesn't mean they have "rights." Land that doesn't belong to individuals belong to the state, feds or is a state or national forest. You could do it but in some places (I live in Alaska) you might be faced with someone carrying a big gun. Buy your own land and live on it rather than "squat" on land someone else worked hard to be able to buy.
