sweet.caroline	No, noT IF YOU are referring to the US Supreme Court. They take what cases they wish. They have to take murder cases if they appeal. But do not have to take defamation cases. Nothing there is federal unless it was filed in federal court as being across state lines, then they take it. but for someone who files in a state court and goes to appellate and then to the state's supreme court and only goes to US Supreme court if it is a federal law or if they choose to hear the case -- grant of certiorari. Not likely would that happen as basic law. Only difference might be as to whether the person was a public figure where the scrutiny was that of public figure instead of that of a privae figure.
