Can I still become a nurse with a criminal background?

About 10 years ago I got into some trouble with my friends (mind you I was still in high school). I was the only one who was an adult, so I got arrested for 4th degree conspiracy. I had to stay over night and wait for my trial the next morning. Before I even went to court they let me go and said that it was being dropped but if I got into trouble again it would come back up. I looked it up and it says it was nolle prosequi. I never got into trouble, and now I am wanting to go into nursing school. I have this on my record, would it affect me getting into nursing school, my dream?

Unless the nursing school does a background check, I do not see why they would deny your application. However, since this is still on your record, it MAY affect whether or not anyone will hire you. Even though you were not formally charged with anything, background checks will produce your arrest record. You should also contact your State's nursing registration board to inquire about their standards as well. You will need to visit a criminal attorney in your State to inquire about having your record expunged or sealed. Not all states will allow this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nolle_prosequi definition. I suggest you find out prior to investing your time/money if this will be a problem. With a nolle prosequi, it is on your record and shows you were charged, be it dropped for not enough evidence or that you were really liable, but unable to prove it. I suggest you talk to a criminal lawyer to see if this can be expunged from your record. Since otherwise, if you apply for any job, and they do a background check, could prevent you from getting any job. good luck

You have to look up the laws for nursing license in your state. Since they dropped it (nolle prosequi) you should be fine.
