Is it legal for your employer to change your hours without your consent?
Find answers to your legal question.

Is it legal for your employer to change your hours without your consent?

I was hired to work 7:00am to 3:00pm as a housekeeper at a nursing home. The census is low, so our hours were cut to where we leave at 1:30pm. As you can imagine, things aren't getting done the way they should with the cut. Now the administrator has decided one of us HAS to work 12:00pm to 6:00pm. That is well into second shift. Can my employer MAKE one of us work 12-6 if were hired for first shift?

im sorry to say but with that type of job, its legal

Yes, unless you are a contract worker then your employer can do almost anything they want.

I'm New
Yes, they can pretty much get away with it. If you are really unsure contact the department of labor or read up on the website. If your hours get cut too much, check into filing unemployment to help make up those lost hours.

Yes of course they can change your hours, and don't need your consent. No they can't make you work the new hours. But if you can't or won't, they'll most likely fire you (no unemployment) and find someone who WILL.

Yes it is legal for your employer to change your hours without your consent. You can also be fired if you refuse to work the new schedule. You will not receive unemployment if you get fired. It's a pain that your hours changed, but nothing ever remains the same forever. You are still employed and receiving a paycheck so you should be happy about that. You are free to look for a job somewhere else if you do not like the new schedule.

At-will employment is a doctrine of American law that defines an employment relationship in which either party can break the relationship with no liability, provided there was no express contract for a definite term governing the employment relationship and that the employer does not belong to a collective bargain (i.e., has not recognized a union). Under this legal doctrine:
“any hiring is presumed to be "at will"; that is, the employer is free to discharge individuals "for good cause, or bad cause, or no cause at all," and the employee is equally free to quit, strike, or otherwise cease work.
