I am currently working as a paralegal in Texas so anything I have to say is from my experience in Texas and you'll have to understand that every state and city is different.
I think you getting hired is 100% dependent on the firms you are applying for. Just because you possess a bachelor's degree does not necessarily give you an automatic foot in the door. Becoming a paralegal is highly specialized and many hiring attorneys I know specifically look for degrees in Paralegal Studies, or any equivalent.
I can't necessarily say it makes you "qualified" enough. Education alone will not get you a job. You have to have other skills and experience to get you to the top of the list. There are many, many people gunning for the same job. Your ability to get hired is going to be dependent on how well you sell the education you paid for and how well you are able to translate that to make an attorney want to hire you. Be sure to write a good resume that shows your Criminology background would be beneficial to the attorney.
With that said, I think it is a good undergraduate degree to have for the area of law you want to become a paralegal in. I just don't want you to think that a BA makes you a shoe in. I only have an Associate's degree and was chosen over many BA's because of my grades and academic achievements. I think if you sell your education well and how it relates to a position as a paralegal, it is very possible. Good luck. |
