Getting a divorce is sort of like getting a leg chopped off. You feel incomplete. You would give anything to be back in a relationship just to be feel whole again. Some people hang on to this time. Most eventually move on. Just like you heal and adapt after having a leg severed, so will you find a new normal after divorce, and you will feel whole again as a single person. And maybe, if you are lucky, you will find the man of your dreams. The important points are give yourself time to heal, and don't hang on. |

I divorced my ex for adultery after 26 years together. It was hard at first and I was on my own for 5 years as a single parent. I then met the most wonderful man, we have been very happily married for 5 years now. I have moved on with my life and have no regrets and I am definitely not damaged in any way. If fact the marriage I am now has shown me what was wrong with my first. |

You get over it. I lived with my ex for 5 years and then we were married for 6 before divorcing. I never felt like I wouldn't be able to have a long-term relationship again. Quite the opposite, in fact... everyone is different, and I knew I'd find someone else who was a more complete package, who was totally better matched to me than he was.
I'm relieved that I got out of that marriage (separated in 2000, divorced in 2002), and don't feel damaged at all. I dated a few guys in the 2 years following the separation. I was in my mid-30s and childless - apparently a rare and hot commodity LOL. (I may have felt differently toward my failed marriage if I'd had any kids with him, but not too much). A couple of the guys I dated started talking marriage reeeeally fast... but it just didn't feel right.
I did finally start dating one guy who'd been engaged twice before but never married. We married in 2003, and I tell ya, I couldn't have designed a better hubby if I was able to - he's incredible. I think the only "weirdness" I ever feel about the whole situation is the fact that I've got an ex-husband at all. But he's totally fine about it. |
