What rights if any do I have to the furniture in the home when I split with my boyfriend, we lived? In The UK.?

What rights if any do I have to the furniture in the home when I split with my boyfriend, we lived? In The UK.? My partner and I have lived together for 3 years, he bought most of the furniture, but not all and now we are splitting he says i should pay him for the things in the home (he is moving out) However as I have paid more than half the bills, and insurances and Will be staying in the home with my 3 children (not his, he has children who come to stay) am I entitled to anything, or can he take the lot? We live in the uk. Many thanks Re asking boyfriend...he just wants to take it all! Which would leave me and my kids with very little, It is his decision to leave and nothing that I have done wrong, he just isn't stuck out for been a step dad, some people are not. His opinion is that he bought it all and he is taking it?

As you weren't married and the children aren't your boyfriends, then you need to decide amongst yourselves what to do. You have no 'rights' as such. As an unmarried couple, you have no right to expect your partner to provide for you or kids that aren't his. If you were married it would be a different matter. It doesn't matter the reason for your split or that fact that you say you have done nothing wrong, bottom line is you are not automatically entitled to anything - you are not getting divorced remember. You need to sit down calmly with his and talk and come to a decision about everything. Good luck.

If you didn't buy them, you don't own them. However, if he's moving out and not taking the furniture with him, congratulations. It's yours and you don't need to pay for it. That would be like me dropping a car off at someones garage and charging them the cost for the car. Doesn't work like that unless you're a big company. :P You're not married, which is annoying for you since you didn't legally have a right to anything of his at any time. "Partners" don't have rights, hence why the old folks like marriage. Rights and all that, makes splitting easier since it's simply halvsies. Kids are also good, means if you're stuck with his kids you're more likely to get some stuff. You are neither married, nor taking care of his kids. Unless you're gay, you've got nothing. You could of course get a lawyer and try to claim some of it, but doubt you'd get anything. Don't tell him that though, say you're getting a lawyer, with any luck he wimps out and gives you some of it.

I don't live in the UK but I would get together receipts from the furniture purchases and bank statements to prove which bills you paid. If you can't come to an agreement with your ex get legal advice.

Maybe it best to ask your now ex-boyfriend about how to split it. But if all come to bad and none of you come to an agreement or a compromise. Maybe try seeking a lawyer or solicitor about it.
