I know a couple people who are married and are first cousins. I have to admit I dont agree with it but will not judge for it. You are taking a big chance if you decide to have children on their health. |

The closeness in DNA can cause retardation in babies.
Think of it this way:
You are half your mom and half your dad.
Your first cousin is half his/her mom and dad.
If your first cousin's mom is your mom's sister each of them has half their parent's genes.
When you have a child, they are supposed to inherit 1/4 your parent's genes and 1/4 your partners parent's genes.
If you have a child with your first cousin, you'd be giving your child 1/2 his/her grandparents gene's instead of the standard 1/4....
Of course, if you're not planning on having children...my answer is moot. |

No risk as far as marriage but if you choose to have children there is where the problem lies.
Too close in genetics (close family members marrying) can cause a much higher risk for birth defects. |

Madness, retardation and abnormalities. The risks of cross breeding can severally screw up the genetic make up of children born out of that union. Plus, there is the social stigma of just marrying your cousin..people will make fun of you and shun you.
Crossbreeding within a family are well documented in the Royal Families of Europe, especially the Hapsburgs and Romanovs...it lead to severe deformaties and genetic traits like Hemophila, a rare blood disorder that causes your blood not to clot. It's not a myth as others have suggested, it's just dangerous, and it's why it's not only socially unacceptable..but it's agains the law too. |
