Air Force and Marriage?

So me and my girlfriend have been together for about two and a half years and about half our relationship has been long distance, her living in Oregon and me in California. We were planning on moving in together when she turned 18, her living with me at my parents home and then making our way out on our own and going to college right away. Now she doesn't think it will work and says either I join the Air Force and we get married or we stay in this long distance relationship her going to college in OR and I in CA. I have no problem joining and marrying her, I just want to make sure i wont spend a lot of time away from her. I have been researching for nearly a week now and have found a lot. So I am interested in Medical careers, so I would go to be a nurse or something in dietary, and if not that I want technology. Are those careers safe from deployment in a war zone? if I get deployed but not in a war zone will she go with me no matter what? What careers are safe from being put in battle or in Iraq? Whats the longest time we will be apart? Thanks for reading and please give me some feedback, especially if you are married in the air force. (to one of responses) Nope, i am a dude haha, guess i have a feminine tone? haha, oh well :p

Hello Erin, You have it all wrong. Long distant relationships do not work when one person is in the military. Military people must be married or the boyfriend/girlfriend relationship has no meaning to the military. Non-married people are considered "single." Single people can get a 24 month assignment overseas to Asia, Europe, or a 12 month assignment to the Middle East and Korea or Greenland in the Air Force. You might be "interested" in Medical AF jobs or "technology" but that doesn't mean that the AF will give it to you. The AF hardly guarantees jobs because people are standing in line waiting 6 - 8 months "just" to get a date to report for basic training. Your "key" to a job is getting the highest ASVAB score (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test) you can. Buy the book and study for it. The AF assigns jobs based on what schools are open the week after you graduate from basic training. You will bring your "desires" with you about 7 - 10 choices to basic training and in the 2nd week you will meet with someone from personnel who will tell you what schools are open for you at that time. Maybe, one of your choices will be open. Then, you can get it. If not, you will have to enter what the AF has - whether you like it or not. The worst thing about the Air Force is that you have to enlist under the Open Mechanical field; Open Administrative field; Open General field; or Open Electronics field. You could get "any" Job in that "field" that you are qualified to perform. Deployment? All jobs can be deployed for about 6 months once every 18 - 24 months depending on if the AF is still engaged in combat zones in the Middle East. As the President brings back more troops then deployments will become fewer. No spouse goes to the country that deployments are underway. Deployments are NOT a Permanent Change of Station. PCS is not a deployment. Everybody has to stop referring to all movements as a deployment. A deployment is when you to away from your base and do some time elsewhere and then come BACK to that base while the family waits for you to return. Family tours overseas are not deployments. They are PCS moves. All careers are eligible to deploy as the needs of the Air Force dictates. No jobs are "safe" from deployment to a battle zone, Afghanistan, Iraq, North Korea, Iran, or any other country the US will next engage in battle with. War will never cease. Because; enemies continue to want to fight us. New recruits will be without their families for the 8 1/2 weeks at basic training + from 8 - 52 more weeks while in a technical school to learn their craft. It depends on how difficult the job is to teach to you. If would be worse if you joined the Navy. Our Navy brothers and sisters on sea duty will be gone at least 6 months out of every year on ship! OK? Hope this answers your question. However, don't join the AF because your significant other "insists on it" and gives you an "ultimatum" ... "Join and Marry - or - stay long distance." If someone told me that I would say.... "Good Bye" and go to college and meet other people. I don't see you having a really strong relationship from the tone of your question. If you are really "not interested on your own" about being in the Air Force for 4 years or more, then, don't join up. Nobody can force anybody to join the military. Not even a court judge. Those days are gone forever. We have an all-volunteer force. Best wishes, Larry Smith Senior Master Sergeant, USAF (Ret.) First Sergeant P.S. If you want to talk more about this you may e-mail me back.

There are absolutely no jobs in the Air Force that are non-deployable. As expeditionary Airman, our job is to be deployable worldwide within a moment's notice. With that, you should also know that there are jobs that don't deploy as often as others. Being that most members are on a tempo band (the rate that we deploy) certain jobs, often back shops won't deploy as much ie. deployed for 4 months out of 24 months. I can tell you from my previous afsc as a "Missile Maintainer" 2M0X1, no one deployed unless they voulnteered. Reason being, nuclear missiles in launch silos are ONLY in the US, so the need to deploy is unnecessary. It's a perfect job for families however, you're limited to Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota as your base locations. If you get deployed, spouses will not go. However if you get stationed overseas then spouses will go. I do however, think that you're in the wrong mindset if you do want to join the Air Force. Our mission is to fly, fight, and win. If you are not ready to fight and die for your country then do not join.
