Did Peleliu have a civilian population during WWII?

My professor swears up and down that there was a civilian population on the island, and that they suffered causalities during the fighting. However, of the 5-7 books I have read on the battle for my paper, there is no mention of them. Contrast that with the equal number of books I have had to read about Okinawa and Saipan, and civilians populations are a large part of the story. Considering there are only around 700 people on the island today, they were either massacred or haven't lived there for too long. So, my question is simple; was there a civil population on the island during this time?

jeeper_peeper321	Yes, most of the civilian population lived on the southern end of the island. Most of the fighting was on the central and northern end of the island. I found an article that says, after the battles, the US military moved the civilians to the north end of the island. Which jives with the above answer. I was stationed on Guam, but never got to Peleliu while I was there.

Yak Rider	Yes, absolutely. I went there in 1984 onboard USS Peleliu LHA-5. There's a large village on the north end of the island. The worst part of the fighting was on Bloody Nose Ridge and that's in the central part of the island. I climbed to the top of the ridge and it's littered with military junk and the caves are full of unexploded ordnance (EOD taped them off). We had a huge party with the village. I met many old people who survived the war on the island. At the time I was there the Navy SeaBees had a Civil Action Team stationed on the island.
