You must serve at least 20 years to retire from the military. In the past, they have offered early retirement at 16 - 19 years during the draw down in the 1990's, when the military was reduced by 40%. Retirement is 2.5% of base pay, for each year served. So someone who was able to retire with 16 years of service, drew 40% retirement pay, vs 50% for someone who retired at 20 years.

You need 20 years to retire right now. 15 year retirements are rarely offered; if I'm not mistaken they offered it during the military draw down after the Gulf War in order to get some career troops to get out before 20 years. If you do 20 years to retire you only get 50% of your average base pay for the highest three years of service. In other words, they add what you made the three years of your career you made the most, divide it by three, and then give you 50% of that. Unless you plan on retiring in a place that has an extremely low cost of living you'll still need another job to supplement your retirement check.
