(ELS) Chapter 5-17 discharge from the Army.?

Roughly one month in. Then out. What does this mean when applying for a job? I didn't do anything bad or get kicked out. Decided that I wanted to be a cop. ELS means entry level seperation. And a 5-17 is basically General Discharge-medical-other. However it covers a variety of things. None of which are great. Some can be bad though. I want a career in law enforcement. Local. Nothing Federal. Highway Patrol, or City Police. Any info appreciated. Thank you. Before this I worked for the state government for roughly 5 years. I am a hardworker. I don't hop from job to job. And Law Enforcement is something I could build the rest of my life around. If anyone knows anything regarding this when applying I'd appreciate it. I don't even know if its worth putting down. I don't think the Army would even consider me as enlisted. If you were in my position. How would you handle the application? Would you put anything for military? If so, what would I put? Etc etc. ANy info is great. * 3 years ago Let me clarify. With only 1 month in and a general ELS discharge, I don't know if the army would recognize me as ever being enlisted. I knew someone way back when who shattered his foot in the marines after 5 months there. They let him go and he quit putting that he was in the military down on his application because they couldn't find any records to even verify that. Granted that was 6 or so years ago. The typical discharge for being in that early is a Chapter 11 "Failure to adapt" you can imagine what that entails. Mine wasn't that. I am a pretty down to earth guy and a job in law enforcement is the kind of "home-run" job I'd want.

Private employers will not generally ask if you have ever served in the military, but it will come up on Federal, State, and some local government jobs. Those agencies do have the right to pull a basic version of you military record. Yours will likely state nothing more than Entry Level Separation - Medical. In most cases, an Entry Level Separation would not be a big deal to any employer. But Law Enforcement is one of those exceptions. They may figure that whatever prevented you from completely Basic Training might prevent you from completing their police academy or interfere with your ability to perform law enforcement duties. So they can ask.

Okay, I have records from 1983 that are computerized, so that ain't it. List your Military experience on all job forms, you will have to list your medical problem that got you released from the Army. For future reference, you have a DD214 some where in your papers. That's the big form, your discharge certificate is to hang on a wall, your chapter paper work is to provide detail as to why you were chaptered. The DD214 is the form everybody who you apply too will be looking for.

Just don't put it down as it is not even 6 months. Law Enforcement agencies do credit and state background checks and as long as you don't have excessive unpaid tickets or misademors/felonies you should be fine. They won't even know unless you tell them. State Troopers dig a little deeper just so you know.

You have to put the military service down, especially since you are applying for law enforcement jobs where background checks are mandatory. It will come up on a records. Things are different than 5 or 6 years ago because everything is computerized. You simply state that you go an entry level discharge and leave it alone. If they ask for a reason, it will be up to you to tell them why. This is much better than for an employer to find out after a background check. Many people do not make it through basic for a variety of reasons. You are not the first person to go through this. You can simply tell an employer that you wanted to get another job or had a family situation.
