How exactly does the GI bill kicker work and the SLRP work?

I am in the army researve, and I was wondering if this is a good deal: MGIBK: $200 SLRP: $20,000 SLRP is Student Loan Repayment Program Does the Gi Bill Kicker money goes directly to me, or to the GI fund, or what. how exactly does it work, explain in full details. How does the SLRP work, does the army pay off all of the loan, do they pay it off in parts or pay it off all at once? i heard that i should borrow up to 15,000 because of tax and intrests, basically if i borrow up to 15,000 it's going to be paid off, anyways explain the full details, thank you for your consideration. bottom line, are these benefits good for my education or what, tell me what you think?

Reserve educational benefits: 1. Tuition assistance - up to $4,500 per year, paid directly to the school 2. Reserve Select Gi Bill - up to $335 per month for full time students, paid directly to you 3. Gi Bill kicker, an additional $200 per month for a full time student, paid directly to you. 4. SLRP - will pays up to $20,000 for student loans you had, prior to enlisting. IE: if your already enlisted, you cannot take out student loans and have them paid, ONLY loans you had before you enlisted. 5. All educational benefits start after you ffinishbasic and AIT

You have to be careful with SLRP as they only pay loans that are taken out in your name and they have to be federal loans, not private loans. I know that Larry said that all of his gi bill went to the school but the reserves may be different. The GI BIll for active duty pays the tuition directly to the university and you get a check for books/fees and you get paid basic allowance for housing. However, that is for active duty members. Your bill is paid to you monthly. It is up to you to put money aside to pay for your tuition and other costs. It is good for 36 months. 36X200=7200. I guess that this is in addition to the 330 dollars per month for the selected reserve Montgomery Gi bill which is around $11,000 total. To be honest, this really does not seem to be a good deal. If I were you, I would look into the National Guard. In most states, the state picks up the cost for tuition at state universities. This is worth much more than the reserves education benefits.

Hello Terry, No. I don't think any money goes "to you." When I used my G.I. bill for my courses the college got the money directly from the V.A. If the government gave "us" the money do you actually think we would use to for college? Best wishes, Larry Smith Senior Master Sergeant, USAF (Ret.) First Sergeant
