Why is it that the Army rank of Lieutenant General is above that of Major General ...?

After all a Major is a higher rank than a Lieutenant , so shouldn't a Major General therefore be above a Lieutenant General...?
Or is it just the Army being daft.

Why is a FIRST Lieutenant represented by a SILVER bar but a SECOND Lieutenant is represent by a GOLD bar? Isn't gold worth more than silver? Shouldn't it be the other way around?
However, to answer your question, the rank originally was SERGEANT MAJOR GENERAL, which clearly is lower than a LIEUTENANT GENERAL. However to prevent confusion with the enlisted rank of SERGEANT MAJOR, as well as other SERGEANT ranks, they dropped the Sergeant and just made it MAJOR GENERAL. |

To confuse people! Just joking.
Major General actually derives from the old rank Sergeant-Major General, which was lower than Lieutenant General. Somewhere along the line, the sergeant was dropped. |

Haha, yeah... that's just the way it is. I can't tell you how often I've had to recall the "General rank trick." "Be My Little General" = Brigadier, Major, Lieutenant, General. |
