In order to stop the shipment of weapons and ammunition to the Palestenians - Israel had announced a blockade in accordance with international law.
All vessels bound for palestenian areas were required to submit to inspection to ensure they were not carrying contraband. Vessels discovered to be carrying weapons, ammunition, explosives or other 'military' goods would be confiscated while vessles found to be carrying legetimate humanitarian supplies would be allowed to continue and offload their supplies.
Due to the effectivness of the Isralei blockade - the Palestenians were running short on ammunition. In an attempt to break the blcoade they instructed their supporters to refuse to submit to Isralie inspections. In addition they deliberately plotted to attack the Isralei soldiers conducting the inspections. Not surprisingly - the Israeli soldiers fought back and won the fight.
The Palestenians used this as a propaganda event to claim that the Israelis had attacked 'innocent' ships. The really sad thing about this was that people believed the Palestenian claims despite the release of videotapes made before the attack that showed the Palestenian supporters preparing to attack the Iseaelis before the boarded their ship. |

Short(ish) answer:
Israel forbade cargo ships from entering Israeli/Palestinian waters, regardless of content as equipment, ordnance and weapons were being shipped to extremists and terrorists via humanitarian aid shipments. The flotilla ignored the ban and ran the blockade anyway. Israeli warships surrounded the flotilla and attempted to board. A sailor on one of the flotilla vessels shot an Israeli in the chest with a 12ga shotgun, which led to a full on assault of the ship from IDF. The IDF soldier survived thanks to a flak vest. You should really do some research yourself for details if you don't want to get shredded when you present. |
