letter to ex boyfriend in military?

It has been 2 years since this guy and I tried to make something between us. We were in our senior year of high school but he was still dealing with his ex and it just wasn't the time. We have said ever since middle school that we would end up together, we had everyting figured out, but we graduated and he went into the military and is now deployed. We were going to get an apartment together in college (our families are really close and we were going to the same school) before he learned he would be leaving. I ended up going out of state and we lost touch. He has a girlfriend now, but she is not faithful and it is more of "stay together because its easier" than an actual relationship. For a while now I have been thinking about him and see him in everything I do. I want to let him know I am thinking about him and how I feel, that we never really got a proper chance and I think we could really have something, but while telling him that if he is happy then I want that for him (which his family knows he isn't). I would just like the first letter to be light but i'm not sure what to say other than "how are you doing/a couple updates" I dont want to go all in on the first letter because it will be a little unexpected. Anyone have specifics I could say or anything i could send with the letter?? Thank you!

I would suggest making sure that he knows that you're there if he needs to talk. Tell him that your friendship has meant a lot to him and you want to make sure he knows you will always be a friend no matter what.
