Canada withdraws from the Kyoto Protocol
anada became the first country to withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol, said Environment Minister, Peter Kent, in a press conference in Ottawa shortly after returning from a dedicated climate change summit held in South Africa.
Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1997 and aims to reduce global emissions of greenhouse gases.

Kent said Monday that it is almost impossible targets to be met, if not taken drastic measures such as banning the use of all motor vehicles in Canada.

"Internally, we will do to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases," he assured Kent, recalling that the United States and China, countries that pollute the most in the world, not even ratified the treaty.

Canada's decision is no surprise, given that the Conservative government has openly criticized his predecessor for having signed the Protocol liberal "without taking into account how it will be fulfilled."

Canada not only failed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 6%, they increased by almost 30%.

Retreating, Ottawa reluctant to pay a fine of $ 14 billion. Canada decision drew criticism from environmental organizations like Greenpeace. Japan and Russia recently announced that they will not sign the treaty renewal in 2012, but did not officially retired.
