IMF excludes a new loan for Greece
International Monetary Fund Tuesday ruled out for now the possibility of increasing its financial assistance to Greece through a new loan, an event seen in Europe.
"Mission is not here to discuss a new program," he said in a telephone conference of the IMF mission chief in Greece, Poul Thomsen.

Thomsen expressed in Athens, where he began discussions Monday with the Greek government and the other two members of the "Troika" of the country's public creditors / Central Bank and European Commission / on economic policy the new government came into office in November, AFP notes.

Evangelos Venizelos Minister of Finance said Monday that the negotiations should lead to a new financing plan for Greece "worth 89 billion euros by the end of January".

Thomsen insisted that, for now, no participation of the IMF on this plan was not negotiated and that the Fund continues to work within the 30 billion granted in 2010.

"We have a program in progress and we intend to continue to support Greece. There is no request for a new program," he said.

Thomsen pointed out that the country could count on its European partners.

"European leaders have said their previous summit in July that they will continue to support Greece as long as necessary for it to regain market access, assuming of course that the program remains on track," he said.
