Merkel: Europe refused "laziness". It took hard rules
Europe refused to be confined to "lazy compromises," said German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday, just hours after euro zone governments have decided to depart the UK to implement stricter tax rules to fight against crisis .
"The British have always been outside the euro ... So we are already familiar with the situation," Merkel said on arrival at the second day of talks with his European counterparts.
"David Cameron was at the table with us. We made this decision, we could not compromise lazy, the benefit of euros," she added. "I had to decide hard rules," said Merkel.
But Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite was more direct. "The British have divided and are outside the decision-making process," she told reporters before meeting in Brussels. "Europe is united," she said.
Cameron said that the agreement presented by its European partners "was not in the interest of Great Britain". Neither Hungary, Czech Republic and Sweden have not yet expressed agreement, saying it must first consult their parliaments.
Merkel assured that the door remains open for countries wishing to join after the reforms. "This will not impede Europe to move forward together on many other issues," she said.
Also, German Chancellor expressed the hope that the agreement will convince financial markets and the global community, which put intense pressure on the EU to end the crisis. "Everyone will see that we learn from our past mistakes. I am very satisfied with the future," she said.
