Milk powder contaminated with radioactive cesium, discovered in Japan
A Japanese food manufacturer, Meiji, announced Tuesday that radioactive cesium detected in several batches of milk powder for children.
Meiji company offered customers the ability to change the purchased product free if it is proved that it is contaminated.
Meiji measured up to 31 becquerel per kilogram of cesium 134 and 137 present in milk powder, a finding most likely related to emissions of radioactive substances from nuclear accident at Fukushima station, AFP noted.
Contamination does not come from milk used, which is largely imported, but may have occurred during the transformation process conducted at a plant in eastern Japan in March, shortly after the nuclear accident.
