Russia: Medvedev signed a decree forming the new State Duma, despite contesting elections
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced on Tuesday it has signed a decree on forming the new State Duma, to meet its first meeting on December 21, despite allegations of rigging elections, on which he promised an investigation.
"Duma to start work (...). I signed today (Tuesday) a decree on December 21 convened the first meeting" of the new lower house, said Medvedev in Gorki residence on the outskirts of Moscow, before a meeting with party leaders who have obtained seats in Parliament. Between these parties is also the ruling party, United Russia, which won the elections with over 49 percent of the vote.
"Everybody is not far agree with the election results, but it is always," he continued.
Complaints were filed in certain offices to vote. Election commissions and courts must examine them carefully. If real frauds are discovered, they must make decisions fair. In total, 117 complaints were filed, "said Russian President.
Saturday mobilized opposition protests unprecedented in this country, during which Moscow was attended by between 50,000 and 80,000 people. Protesters denouncing massive fraud and seeks the annulment of elections. On December 24 set a new meeting, the opposition expects at least 50,000 people.
OSCE observer mission said Monday that revealed irregularities "frequently" during the election and mentioned in particular the introduction of additional ballot papers in ballot boxes.
